As much as you love your pampered pooch, there is no denying that they make your home smell more than a little unsavory. Or to be more honest, they make your home smell like a kennel.

Fortunately, if this is a problem for you, there are steps that you can take to stop your house from smelling like a dog.

From cleaning your dog regularly to allowing them out in the yard as often as possible, to eliminating pet dander, keep reading to discover five ways that you can enjoy a fresh-smelling home whether you have one, two, or five dogs living within it.

Clean Their Bed

If your dog has its own bed and you have not washed this in a while, you may be shocked at just how bad it smells. Think about how often you wash the bedding on your own bed. Now think about how much smellier a dog is than a person and how it will affect a dog bed's aroma.

It's not pretty. Therefore, you should aim to wash your dog's bed once a week if they sleep in it every night or as and when it starts to smell like dog if they only use it sporadically.

Steam Clean Your Carpet

Carpet holds on to dog hair much more rigorously than other flooring types, and you may very well find that your carpet stinks of pet odor. If this is the case in your home, then your best bet is to invest in or hire a steam cleaner so that you can steam clean your carpet once a month or more if you feel like it needs it.

Not only will these leave your home free from any lingering pet smells, but it will also make your carpet look brand new again.

Embrace the Outdoors

Open the windows. Let your dog out in the backyard as often as they please. Do everything you can to let the fresh air in and the dog smell out.

If your dog is left home alone for long periods of the day and you are not there to let them out into the backyard, you may want to think about investing in a sliding glass pet door for your home. Not only do these look super stylish, but they also allow your dog complete freedom when it comes to going outside. You can even find automatic sliding door sensors that are ideal for cats and dogs and can accommodate up to four pets.

Bulk Buy Air Fresheners

If you can find a scent you like, air fresheners, especially ones that are specifically designed to combat pet odor, are a great option for the colder months when you may not necessarily want all your windows open.

Alternatively, an air purifier is a good idea for getting rid of both pet hair, and litter box smells, and again, you can find ones that specifically target dog smells.

Clean Your Dog

This may seem obvious, but if you want your dog to smell less, you should try to wash them more frequently. As a general rule, you should aim to clean your dog once a week and make sure that you use cleaning products that are specifically designed for dogs, as human shampoo can dry out their skin and make them more susceptible to parasites.
