Do you ever wonder if your cat is happy?

It may sound like an odd question as most cats are happy as long as they can sleep and eat, aren’t they? Well, actually, no. There is, in fact, a lot more to cat happiness than meets the eye. Start by providing them cat toys, shelves, and scratching posts but then keep reading to discover exactly how you can make your cat healthy and happy in six simple steps.

1) Consider a companion

Indoor cats can get lonely, especially if you are out at work all day. Therefore, you might want to consider adding another furry companion to your family so that they have a playmate for times when you are not there.

If you are not sure where to start when it comes to finding a new cat, you could try your nearest animal shelter or ask family and friends if they know anyone who has kittens they are looking to home. However, make sure that bringing in a new cat won’t upset your current one. Your cat may love having you all to themselves.

2) Facilitate Climbing

Cats love to climb, and you may have already noticed your feline friend pursuing prey into trees in your backyard. Although this can be fun for them, it can also be a good idea to set up climbing activities and equipment for them to use in the house.

You can buy some great cat trees online, or you could build your own climbing area with a selection of cardboard boxes, but be warned, these may not last long!

3) Enable Roaming

Although many cats prefer to be indoors rather than outside, that doesn’t mean that they want to be confined to your home at all times. If you are not a fan of cat flaps, you may want to think about investing in a sliding glass pet door that allows your cat to enter and leave your home completely independently. Controlled by automatic sliding door sensors, only your nominated pet will be able to open and close the door, providing enhanced security and energy efficiency.

4) Train Your Cat

Not only can training your cat to use a litter box make you happier as an owner, but it will also make your cat happier too. That being said, you need to make sure that you offer the right environment for your cat, including ensuring that the litter is not uncomfortable on their paws and they do not have to share a litter box with another cat.

5) Spay and Neuter Your Cat

You should always spay and neuter your cat if you want them to be happy as your pet. This is because it is a cat’s natural instinct to want to go outside and mate, so an unneutered cat may feel stressed and agitated being kept indoors.

Furthermore, by spaying or neutering your cat, you are stopping your pet from contributing to the already overpopulated and unwanted cat population in the United States.

6) Provide Unconditional Love

One of the best things about pet ownership is the unconditional love that you receive from your furry friend, so why not make sure you return the favor?

Simply by sitting on the couch having a cuddle or stroking your cat while they purr with delight will most certainly make your cat the happiest one in the world.
